Programme Overview

The Durban Film Office has three development programmes targeting filmmakers at different levels in the industry: the Development Fund Grant, the Micro Budget Grant and the Festivals & Markets Support Grant.

Objectives of the Development Programmes:

Development Fund

Up to R250,000 per project

Designed to support intermediate to experienced producers based in eThekwini who are developing feature fiction or documentary projects for the local and/or international market. Two eThekwini-based projects supported per year.

  • Open to eThekwini-based production companies
  • Feature fiction or documentary projects
  • Grant funding towards development phase
  • Up to R250,000 per project

Micro Budget Film Fund

R350,000 per project

Supports emerging filmmakers and encourages the production of locally developed content that contributes to the growth of the film industry. Seeks to cultivate a "Made-for-TV" film model that is cost-effective, practical and commercially viable. Three successful applicants per cycle.

  • Open to emerging filmmakers (eThekwini-based)
  • Feature-length film production
  • R350,000 per project towards production
  • Made-for-TV model

Festivals & Markets

Up to R30,000 per project annually

Supports the promotion of locally based films by providing a suitable support programme with clear guidelines for attendance at international markets and festivals. Applicants may apply for sponsorship of flights, accommodation, registration fees and marketing materials.

  • Open to Durban-based production companies
  • Must have official festival invitation or market selection
  • Flights, accommodation & registration fees
  • One application per applicant per year
Eligibility Must be officially invited to screen at a festival or present at a co-production market. Must be aligned with national, provincial or local government festival programmes.
